Manufacturer Helix Group plc is to close its UK plastic manufacturing facilities at Lye in the West Midlands and to increase its supply of goods from the Far East.
Following consultation with staff and union representatives, the group has issued redundancy notices to its employees and the equivalent of 47 full time jobs will be affected as a result of the closure. It is initially looking for voluntary redundancies.
In a statement issued last week, the company says its directors are looking for advice and assistance from local government and business support organisations on the possible re-deployment or retraining of impacted employees.
Helix first announced the possible closure at the end of November, saying that the company board had taken the decision as a result of the diminishing profitability of the business over a number of years, due to competitive pressure from the Far East, and based on forward projections that show a continuation of the trend.
