The BOSS Federation has launched its WEEE Directive education programme for members by advising them of the preliminary steps that can be taken in advance of the rules being confirmed.
Environmental consultant Bernard Hall says two things can be done by brand owners or importers to prepare for the law, first identify which of the products fall into the 10 WEEE product categories and second, to weigh those products as product weight will be a key determinant of the recycling/recovery obligation.
The 10 WEEE product categories are: large household appliances, small household appliances, IT and telecoms equipment, consumer equipment like TVs, VCRs, hi-fis,lighting equipment, tools, toys, leisure and sports equipment, medical equipment, monitoring and control equipment and automatic dispensers.
BOSS industry standards manager, Philippa Morrell says: "The delays on implementing WEEE have been frustrating but, at least, no one should now be surprised when it eventually comes into force. When this happens, we will use the BOSS website, our newsletters, face-to-face meetings and seminars to keep our members fully informed."
