Paul Reynolds, CEO of BT Wholesale, has declared the beginning of the 'fourth wave of innovation – the IP revolution' in a keynote address to over 700 delegates at the 21st Century Communications World Forum in London. He urged the telecommunications industry to respond to the challenges of a radically different communications landscape dominated by convergence and IP.
According to Reynolds, with the dawn of the IP age, the telecommunications industry finds itself at a decisive moment. The choice for operators worldwide is whether to adapt their technology and business models to support fully converged, IP based services, or stand still and risk being 'relegated to commodity players'.
In a tough market for communications services, where carriers and services providers face declining margins and revenues, they must make the bold transition from selling simple capacity to providing a full portfolio of ICT services in order to survive. The winners in the new digital networked economy will be those industry players that can 'create smart applications that the market wants and is willing to pay for'.
