JH Clarke, a 150 year old, family-run business based in Chelmsford, has ceased trading. Liquidators were called into the stationers and booksellers this week to wind up the business which at its peak turned over £3.5-£4 million.
Managing director Neil Arnold says the company was hit by increased competition, rising overheads and increased legislation. "It a tragedy. We have had streams of customers coming in to say how terribly sorry they are that we are going."
Clarkes operated from two retail outlets in Chelmsford and was a member of Office Club.
